before the world fell to pieces

Essay
Before the World Fell to Pieces was the debut solo exhibition of Malaysian photography artist Eiffel Chong. Taking place in 2012, the year that became an internet meme as the end of the world according to the ancient Mayan calendar, Chong’s exhibition explored themes of escathology and apocalypse as expressed through moody, disorienting photographs. However, it is not disaster in progress that Chong is fascinated with, but rather the ominous calm before an unthinkable demise. The exhibition featured two bodies of work, “A Matter of Life and Death” and “A Fragile Thing Called Man”.
