Kow Leong Kiang
Other People
Other People was a solo exhibition by Malaysian painter Kow Leong Kiang, of portraits made during a sixty-day artist residency in Vermont in the fall of 2004. The paintings depict Nellie, Aiden, Rie, Yukinori, Oraib, Victor, Kyalo, and Alanna—artists and writers who were part of his cohort. Kow has painted their portraits—once strangers, now friends—in the misty light of Vermont’s cold, grey October, their faces softly emerging through a haze of memory. While Kow’s focus in the years prior to the residency had been on the East coast of Malaysia, epitomised in the visage of a Malay beauty, Vermont granted him a new light and temperature in which to experiment, opening up new sensibilities through which to explore the nuances and subtleties of the human face.
