VWFA turns 10 this year. It has been ten years of growing and learning, of making great partnerships, and great friendships. It has been our privilege to work with so many gifted artists, curators, writers and art organisers both within Malaysia and from the region. We have had the good fortune too to have the support of passionate collectors who have great faith as we do in the development of local and regional art.
The project “Signed & Dated” starts from a simple premise. In the business of buying and selling art, it is still common to seek out this signature and date of completion on a work of art as some proof of authenticity. In our everyday lives we sign and date statements, agreements, approvals, protests, pleas. We leave our mark, make a record of ourselves. We also sign and date letters. “Signed & Dated” therefore is about putting a mark to, taking responsibility for what we make and say, and about correspondence, the way we speak across borders. As a commercial gallery, we are a marketplace, not simply of commodities changing hands but also a marketplace of ideas, involving emotional, intellectual, aesthetic and professional exchanges. To celebrate our anniversary, we invited the many artists we have exhibited over the years to contribute a small, postcard-sized work to form part of a larger wall installation and limited edition book. This little project is a guestbook of a sort, a compendium of marks and messages from many of the artists we have worked with and exhibited over the years. We have been overwhelmed by the response – over 70 artists both within Malaysia and from around the world have taken part.
The Malaysian artists we represent include Anurendra Jegadeva, Askandar Unglehrt, Nadiah Bamadhaj, Chang Fee Ming, Chong Siew Ying, Jalaini Abu Hassan, Kow Leong Kiang, Noor Mahnun Mohamed, Redza Piyadasa, Nirmala Dutt Shanmughalingam, Wong Hoy Cheong, Wong Peng Fey, and Yee I-Lann, and we also represent Emil Goh, Mella Jaarsma, Lindy Lee and Manit Sriwanichpoom on a regional level. A number of these artists have contributed something further to the show, giving us a more focused view of their work now.
