Between Generations
Held in conjunction with the 50th anniversary of Malaysia’s independence, *Between Generations: 50 Years of Art Across Modern Art in Malaysia* was a curated exhibiiton of works from the collections of the University of Malaya and Universiti Sains Malaysia, in communication with new works by a younger generation of contemporary artists. The exhibition explored interconnections between the generations, from the modern pioneers of art practice in the then-nascent nation and Malaysian artists born after Merdeka working in the present day.
A key influence in the selection was the timeline charted out by Redza Piyadasa and TK Sabapathy in their publication, *Modern Artists of Malaysia* (1983). The exhibition was organised in thematic clusters of works from both the pioneering and contemporary generations, exploring how different artists over the decades have tackled canonical themes in modern art, and seeking to show to audiences the plurality and dynamically diverse nature of Malaysian art history and identity.
