reGRUP – 30 Years On brought together the seven artists of the original 1967 GRUP exhibition — Cheong Laitong, Ibrahim Hussein, Jolly Koh, Latiff Mohidin, Anthony Lau, Syed Ahmad Jamal, and Yeoh Jin Leng — in a retrospective survey of three decades of work, mounted by Valentine Willie Fine Art in Kuala Lumpur. GRUP, an acronym for Gerak, Rupa, Ubur, Penyataan (Movement, Form, Torch, Statement), had its singular outing in March 1967, a show that arrived as both provocation and declaration.

The seven artists, most of them freshly returned from training in Europe, brought the late modernist sensibilities of abstraction and expressionism to a local art world still dominated by academic realism, and their challenge proved decisive and lasting; the ideas they introduced, and disseminated through institutions such as the Specialist Teacher’s Training Institute and Institut Teknologi MARA, soon became the dominant ideology of Malaysian art education. The collective did not survive, but its influence proved impossible to contain. Thirty years on, curated by Wong Hoy Cheong, the exhibition charted how each artist had carried that original impulse forward into a singular and often mythologised practice.

The exhibition made a deliberate effort to recover original works from 1967, a task complicated by the many pieces lost or untraceable in the intervening years, and in doing so offered a critical mapping of how abstract expressionism took root in Malaysian soil, how a generation of students and teachers carried it forward, and how these seven artists remained, three decades on, the unavoidable reference points for any conversation about Malaysian modernism.
