Chuah Chong Yong
Storeys
In Storeys, Chuah Chong Yong utilizes the architectural typology of the pre-war shophouse in Alor Gajah, Melaka, as a site for investigating urban decay, historical continuity, and the fragility of cultural memory.
The centerpiece of the exhibition, the Pre War Building for Sale series, employs a mixed-media approach to document the physical erosion of heritage structures. In works such as House Cracks and Anai-anailing (2001), Chuah moves beyond descriptive architectural rendering to highlight the biological and structural interventions such as cracks and termite infestations that signify the “neglected” status of these buildings. By framing these facades under the “for sale” moniker, the artist critiques the commodification of history and the precariousness of the small-town vernacular amidst Malaysia’s rapid modernization.
