Liew Kwai Fei
绘字写画 雅俗共赏 – 廖贵辉个展 . Painted Words and Written Paintings: For the Refined and For the Masses

Essay
This exhibition marked a leap in Liew’s practice from a minimalist style of formally essentialist painting-objects to a baroque and maximalist style. The show featured large, hinged canvasses that stretched nearly from wall to ceiling, filled with eccentric figures and long texts in multiple languages. Most of the paintings are plays on words, the exhibition itself a tongue-tied jumble. Verbal language crosses over into the visual, native tongues collide in characteristic “Manglish” (Malaysian English), and 1Malaysia multiculturalism goes haywire.
