Jalaini Abu Hassan
Lines of Thought 1992 – 2011
Reflecting upon his twenty-year career, Jalaini Abu Hassan shares with audiences rare and never before seen drawings from some of his most well-known series to date as well as new works on paper from his latest body of work. Assembling a constellation of past ideas and observations the exhibition highlights the significance of draftsmanship for this classically trained artist and the importance of drawing in the development of artistic thought.
A showcase of various small drawings, sketches, and studies made by the industrious Jalaini Abu Hassan (“Jai”) over the span of almost 20 years. The show reflects Jai’s compulsive tendency to conjure images out of any surface available to him, even on surfaces as small as a throwaway receipt. The subjects comprise ordinary matters, including figure studies, object studies, and abstract doodles, altogether charting the idle “lines of thought” that fill up an artist’s time in between studio sessions. The show is unique for presenting small-scale works from a painter known for his larger-than-life canvasses and narratives.
