Art Around 1000
The Art Around 1000 series functioned as an annual strategic intervention by Valentine Willie Fine Art to broaden the Malaysian art market through commercial accessibility. By capping the price of all works at RM 1,000, the exhibition sought to democratize art collecting, targeting a burgeoning middle class and younger audience who were previously distanced from the gallery circuit by high entry costs.
Artistically, the 2006 edition provided a non-hierarchical space where established practitioners and emerging artists exhibited alongside one another. The price constraint often dictated a shift in medium and scale, with the show typically featuring works on paper, sketches, small-scale sculptures, and experimental studies that might otherwise remain in the studio. Rather than functioning as a thematic survey, Art Around 1000 offered a cross-section of the local scene’s technical diversity while simultaneously serving a role in cultivating a new generation of art patrons.
