VWFA 15th Anniversary: WITH THE MALAYSIAN COLLECTION OF VALENTINE WILLIE
VWFA KL celebrates its 15-year anniversary by presenting a rare glimpse into the private collection of Valentine Willie. Exclusively, showcasing works by Malaysian artists the exhibition marks not only 15 years of the gallery’s existence as a commercial space but also the parallel passion of the Director, an avid collector of Southeast Asian contemporary art.
For personal enjoyment as well as artistic support and development the exhibition reveals the art of collecting through a diverse range of Malaysian artists across generations that also provide various insights into the history and development of art in the country. Featuring many artists that the gallery has worked with in the past and continues to work with until today audiences will be treated to a display of rare and desirable works by Malaysian Modern Masters as well as a range of our best and most dedicated Contemporary Artists working today.
Collecting art is an obsessive pursuit. Born out of the belief in the aesthetic and social values of creativity, the rules of collecting are nuanced and varied but always begin with simply buying what you love. This support allows artists to develop and grow whilst stimulating new friendships and opportunities. It is this system of patronage and nurturing that stimulates the longevity of artistic practice.
The gallery began in 1996 out of a passion for supporting, promoting and exposing contemporary art in Malaysia and the Southeast Asian region. During this time VWFA has worked with artists across Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam. To celebrate our 15 years in the industry we look back at the artists we have worked with through the collection and devotion of Valentine Willie himself to present our continuing commitment and inspiration of Contemporary Art.
