Kaloy Sanchez
Too Loud a Solitude

Essay
A solo exhibition by the Filipino artist Kaloy Sanchez. The exhibition presented a collection of large, black and white oil paintings alongside smaller mixed-media drawings. The oil paintings introduced Sanchez’s now signature style of capturing nude models in various poses suggesting turmoil, apathy, or emotional disturbance. Against the sepia-toned wash of the paintings and their hauntingly incomplete backgrounds, Sanchez’s nude figures appear immensely vulnerable and transient, as if they could disappear if you looked away.
