Phuan Thai Meng

MADE IN MALAYSIA

09 Sept - 26 Sept 2009

Valentine Willie Fine Art is delighted to present Phuan Thai Meng’s long anticipated solo exhibition “Made in Malaysia”.

Since winning the Juror’s Choice Award from the Philip Morris Malaysia – ASEAN Art Awards in 2000, he has since gained regional recognition for his superbly crafted surrealist paintings that explore between-spaces within an urban environment. His process is described as ‘honing in on the ordinary as an attentive observer to the awkward relationship between these spaces and its inhabitants’.

For his solo exhibition, Thai Meng trains his palette on an expanded range of contemporary issues, from consumerism to urban decay to domestic ennui. They paint an unsettling picture of our contemporary experience, revealing the complex lives we lead through a sharp and incisive portrayal of the disquieting sites and objects that surrounds us.

“Made in Malaysia” is a long awaited solo exhibition that affirms Phuan Thai Meng as an emerging painter in Malaysian contemporary art.

In Made in Malaysia, Phuan Thai Meng utilized his second solo exhibition to conduct a critical inquiry into the psychological and physical facets of nation-building within the contemporary Malaysian landscape. Building on the regional recognition garnered from his 2000 Philip Morris ASEAN Art Award win, Phuan’s practice in this series focused on “honing in on the ordinary,” meticulously documenting the “between-spaces” of the urban environment. His work is defined by an analytical observation of the “awkward relationship” between built spaces and their inhabitants, where the familiar is transformed into a “surreal-like dream world”.

The exhibition employed a strategy of the “uncanny,” using hyper-detailed realism to depict sites of urban decay, consumerist symbols, and domestic ennui as “disquieting tableaux”. Rather than offering a celebratory narrative of development, the series provided an unsettling portrayal of the contemporary experience, positioning painting as a tool for “staging an event” that reveals the blunt realities beneath the surface of modern life. As a founding member of the artist collective Rumah Air Panas (RAP), Phuan’s approach reflects a broader generational preoccupation with social-spatial dynamics and the role of the artist as an incisive chronicler of the nation’s evolving identity. By isolating prosaic objects and sites, Made in Malaysia challenged the viewer to confront the friction between the promises of progress and the persistent residues of neglect within the city.
