Jason Wee

Ruins – Captain’s Log Entries on Days with No End

06 May - 23 May 2009

Jason Wee used his residency to continue his research in maritime boundaries and maps. Starting with a reading of the seminal play ‘The Descendents of the Eunuch Admiral’, Jason began looking at the maps of the time of the eunuch Admiral Cheng Ho. Intrigued by the fact that the naval maps were both cutting edge and highly inaccurate at the same time, Jason started thinking about non-places and what they might look like. And just like Cheng’s maps, Jason’s photographs are of imaginary spaces, seas with no end lit by a surreal twillight’.

Touching on questions of history, geography and disputed maritime borders, RUINS is a moving composition of a Captain’s beautiful and improbable journey through distant seas.

These are mood pieces, studies of the shifts in light, following the horizon as it descends down
the retina. This is what I imagine it might be like to be on a ship far from land, far from any markers
of habitation, season, or location. All I see is sunlight, ocean and sky. Any hope of safe landing is
ruined by the distance. The voyage becomes keyed to small changes in the horizon. On a ship
like this, I would imagine that it would be hard to keep my eyes open.
