Tanah Ayer: Malaysian Stories from the Land
Tanah Ayer: Malaysian Stories from the Land was a group exhibition organised collaboratively between Valentine Willie Fine Art with Selasar Sunaryo Art Space, presented at Selasar Sunaryo in Bandung. Purposefully employing the historical spelling of “tanah air”—meaning homeland in Malay, but literally meaning earth (tanah) and water (air)—the exhibition aimed to highlight the complexities of the relationship between Malaysians and their soil. The exhibition was a multimedia experience featuring paintings and sculpture alongside photography, video, sound art, and new media installations. By interrogating the symbolic and aesthetic values of place as well as the personal attachments to place and identity, the exhibition presented a layered response to the current state of the nation, spanning the ancestral soil, the modern urban skyline, and everything that falls in the spaces between.
