Wong Perng Fey

First Solo

2000

In his debut solo exhibition, Wong Perng Fey presented a body of work that signaled a transition from academic landscape studies to an introspective, abstract engagement with the natural world. Following his training at the Malaysian Institute of Art (MIA), Perng Fey’s practice focused on the minutiae of the forest floor—broken branches, stones in running water, and decaying leaves—rendered through a lens that Askandar Unglehrt identified as possessing an “eerie surrealistic quality.” Rather than adhering to traditional panoramic vistas, the exhibition emphasized the fragmentation of space and a rigorous experimentation with the interplay of light and darkness. The works, including the Weekend series, reflect a burgeoning interest in the “landscape-to-landscape” transition, where the physical environment serves as a scaffold for psychological and formal inquiry.
