Helen Guek Yee Mei

Pilgrimage

14 June - 30 June 2001

Helen Guek Yee Mei’s debut solo exhibition, Pilgrimage, represented a maturation of the symbolic language she introduced following her training at the Malaysian Institute of Art (1992–1995). Having first gained attention in the gallery’s inaugural 3 Young Contemporaries exhibition in 1997, Guek’s early practice was characterized by an exploration of domestic solitude and personal experience. Pilgrimage marked a transition toward a more expansive interiority, where the figure serves as a vessel for a metaphorical journey or a “coming of age.”

The works in this exhibition are defined by a fluid, figurative line and a reliance on “emotional color”—a palette deployed to convey psychic states rather than literal representation. In paintings such as In The Vessel (2001), Guek utilizes personal symbolism to navigate themes of silence, joy, and the search for identity. By moving away from the domestic literalism of her earlier sketches, the artist established a practice grounded in subtle metaphor and the investigation of quiet, internal emotions.
