Geraldine Javier
Museum of Many Things
In Museum of Many Things, Geraldine Javier investigates the impulse to collect and the function of the museum as a repository for personal and collective history. Curated by Tony Godfrey, the exhibition was presented in partnership with the Philippine Embassy in Singapore as part of the Philippine Art Trek V. The project is centered on the transformation of objects into art, specifically incorporating items from a defunct private museum once maintained by a woman known as Madame A.
The exhibition frames the artist as a collector, exploring the point at which a collection transitions into an artwork and when a collector’s subjective vision begins to embody the “memories and imaginings” of a civilization. Rather than adhering to the didactic or narrative structures typical of institutional museums, Javier’s “museum” is designed to elicit a reflexive response, encouraging viewers to “let go” and engage with their own memories. By repurposing the fragments of Madame A’s lost collection, the works interrogate the fragility of institutional legacies and the role of the individual in preserving the “beautiful or strange” remnants of the past.
