Since winning the Grand Prize at the Philip Morris ASEAN Art Awards in 1998, Kow Leong Kiang has garnered much attention and success with depictions of nostalgic rural scenes of east-coast Malaysia captured through his masterful feather-light rendering. His prodigious skills and techniques is inspired by his documentation of the region he travels to. Each of his painting is like a vignettes, conveying intimate stories of rural life, reminiscent of storytellers or "pelipurlara" of the past.
